Electric guitars are stringed instruments that are equipped with the pickup devices which convert vibrations of metal strings into electric audio signals. Electric guitars are normally plugged into guitar amplifiers to output them through cables.

As acoustic guitars had existed before 19th century, the first electric guitar called "the Flying Pan" was invented in 1931 by Rickenbacker. But it was the kind of instrument called steel guitar, it was different from electric guitars hung from shoulders with guitar straps which we know well.
Now, the most popular electric guitars are Fender Stratocaster and Gibson Les Paul, those have been invented after a few decades from that.

Electric guitars can be classified into the following 3 types depending on its body structures.

Both full hollow-body guitars and semi acoustic guitars are made from glued-together sheets of wood. On the other hand, the solid-body guitars are made from a block of wood.
Solid-body electric guitars have no vibrating soundboards, so it is easy to exchange or add parts, for that reason there are many varieties of solid-body electric guitar. This type is the epoch-making electric guitar.
